10 Ways to Mark a Milestone Birthday

Holy hot stuff, you’re another year older. And this birthday isn’t just any birthday; it’s a notable one. It’s a milestone—you know, like the years you turn 16, 18, 21, or those ages that end in a zero or five.

An extra special anniversary of your birth requires an equally special celebration. And you don’t have to throw an extravagant party or plan the trip of a lifetime, though those are certainly options! But sometimes the smallest gestures, acts or traditions hold the most meaning.

No matter what your personality or budget, there are plenty of fun ways to mark a milestone birthday. Here are 10 ideas for recognizing your big b-day:

1. Write a letter to your future self.

Craft a love note to yourself and open it on a future birthday—maybe next year or maybe the next milestone. Dream about where you think you’ll be then, send well wishes and pass along a few pieces of advice. Your future self will thank you.

2. Spend time with your favorite people.

Friends, family, neighbors, colleagues, whomever your best buddies are, carve out time to get together. In the midst of our busy lives, it’s way too easy to let too much time go by before reconnecting with the ones we love. And if you can’t make it a priority on your birthday, when can you?

3. Go over-the-top.

Think grand, bold, statement-making. Do something slightly dramatic, something that makes you ridiculously happy. Pick up some oversized balloons or scoop up flowers for every room of your home. It’s time for fun!

4. Invest in a classic piece.

Whether it’s a gorgeous handbag or luxurious armchair, splurge on an investment piece that will last for years to come. Every time you see it, you’ll be reminded of your special day.

5. Get away.

Plan a quick weekend trip or just spend the night in a hotel for a “staycation” of sorts. Did someone say room service?

6. Commit a random act of kindness.

Make someone else’s day as special as yours. Leave a little surprise for a stranger or share a genuine compliment—and know your birthday is a just a bit brighter.

7. Set a big, scary, exciting goal.

Life is good and it will only get better. Declare your dream-come-true goal, and then map out a plan to make it happen.

8. Design a day of fun.

Block off the entire day and do what your heart desires. Whether you spend it lounging in pajamas, exploring the city, pampering yourself, trying something new, or dancing till dawn, celebrate your day your way.

9. Capture the moment.

A picture is worth a thousand words—and a ton of memories. It could be a strip of snaps from a photobooth, a collection of shots from a professional shoot or a few Instagram photos on your phone. Mark the occasion with a photograph that represents who you are, right now.

10. Show yourself some love.

Acknowledge the amazing things you’ve accomplished. Take a look in the mirror and appreciate your body for all it does. Jot down a list of ten (or more!) positive statements about yourself. You’re fabulous, darling!

How will you celebrate your next milestone birthday?
